Last weekend of June
A medieval atmosphere is recreated in the Borgo, Canneti, Castello and
Prato quarters to commemorate Emperor Frederick the 1st, known as
Barbarossa, meeting Pope Adrian IV's papal emissaries in 1155.
San Quirico celebrates this event with shows, period costume parades, flag
throwing and archery competitions in the Horti Leonini Gardens to choose
the winner of the much-prized Brocche dell'lmperatore.
The festival
starts with the Quarters drawing lots for the challenges. The Quarters
celebrate the Mass and flag throwers perform in the
piazza, followed by a historical re-enactment in the Collegiate church
yard.
The Grand Finale features archery and flag challenges in the Horti
Leonini gardens, followed by celebrations in thé winning quarters.
