Tarquinia, Etruscan city, was a very prosperous settlement of Lazio.
The ancient city is located on a hill not far from the sea.
Here, remains of an imposing
circle of walls have been discovered, such as the the foundations of a great Etruscan temple known as the "Ara della
Regina", the decoration of which includes a terra-cotta group of winged horses in Hellenistic style, that is considered a
masterpiece of Etruscan art.
The necropolis of "Monterozzi", on the south
west of the ancient city, contains 6,000 graves cut
in the rock. It is famous for its 200 painted tombs, the earliest of which
date from the 7th century B.C. It constitutes a unique and exceptional
testimony to the ancient Etruscan civilisation.
"Palazzo Vitelleschi", hosts the National Archeological Museum, containing a rich collection
of Etruscan and Romans exhibits.
