Picturesque village in the province of Siena, in southern
Tuscany. Sarteano rises between the undulating hills of ancient
Etruria on the buttress of the Cetona Mount, in a magnificent
level ground position. It dominates the Chiana Valley, Arezzo’s
Valley and a great part of Umbria. The town is surrounded by a
double circle of walls and it is has been well known since ancient
times for its curative thermal waters. |

The castle, towering on a hilltop, offers the opportunity to enjoy a
suggestive view. The thermal waters Park is best known as “Bagno
Santo” and houses a complex of a thermal pool, recreation and sport
facilities.
Among the monuments worthy of note is the Romanesque Church of St.
Lorenzo preserving a beautiful marble ciborium and the Church of St.
Martino in Foro with works by Beccafumi, Vanni and Pellicciaio.
Other historical monuments include the town hall, the Arrischianti
theater, Palazzo Piccolomini, Palazzo Goti-Fanelli, Palazzo Cennini
(15th C) and Palazzo del Podestà.
The Archeological Museum of Sarteano, hosted on the ground floor of
the 15th century Palazzo Gabrielli, is just a short distance from
the central piazza. It contains a collection of finds found in the
nearby necropolises on hills around Sarteano and illustrates the
history and culture of the territory from the Bronze Age to the
Roman Era. (Cinerary vases, bronze objects, painted ceramics and
much more.)
Just outside of the town is the ancient thermal spring of St. Lucia.

The “Giostra del Saracino” is the most important Festival of
Sarteano and is renewed as a rooted tradition in the soul of
its inhabitants, divided into five districts. This festival
takes place every year on the 15th August in the afternoon.
Magnificent are the allegories, the costumes, the parades with
flag wavers from each district. Exciting is the full gallop
ride with the knights (horseman riders). The first documents
on the ride date back to 1853.
