The Hamlet of Monteriggioni
lies in the ondulated landscape of Sienese hills , north of Siena.
It represents an important evidence of military medieval
architecture dating back to the 13rd Century. The town is completely
encircled by its defensive walls and its 14 towers. The Borgo
preserves the ancient medieval features. |

In the surroundings : Badia a Isola, a magnificent Abbey
built in the 12th C.
The Romanesque church of the monastery has 3 naves interior with
nice capitals. It preserves also a medieval sarcophagus, some
remains of 16th C frescoes attributed to Taddeo di Bartolo , a 16th
C baptismal font and an altar piece by Sano di Pietro.
The hermitage of St. Lorenzo al Lago (12th C.) preserves a 14th
century fresco cycle by the Sienese painter Lippo Vanni. Of note is
the "Crucifixion" a beautiful fresco hosted in the "Sala Capitolare"
by Giovanni di Paolo. (1445).

On the 1st week end of July in Monteriggioni takes
place the " Festa Medievale", the most famous medieval recalling of
Italy. It offers a throwback to the past that have not equals.
Monteriggioni recalls its ancient history and lifestyle. Local
people dressed in medieval costume play various personages, such as
farmers, merchants, soldiers, cross-bowmen, friars etc. showing
along the narrow streets and the piazzas, the ancient arts and
crafts In the hamlet visitors meet also magicians, astrologers,
ballad-singers, jesters, jugglers, and acrobats coming from far-off
countries, while in the hostelries people taste medieval dishes and
drinks.
