Colle Val d'Elsa lies about 24 km north of Siena. The town is made up of 2 parts: the modern town, called "Colle Bassa" and the suggestive hilltop medieval town called "Colle Alta".

  
     
 

 Sights to see and things to do

  
  Colle Bassa has its center in the animated Piazza Arnolfo di Cambio characterized by the beautiful portico. Not far from the piazza is the Church of St Augustine (12th C) with the interior built by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder (16th C).

Colle Alta, has well preserved the typical medieval structure with narrow paved lanes, steeply sloping streets and flights of steps. An arch opening in the facade of the beautiful Palazzo Campana leads to the town. Along the streets of the Castle overlooks old medieval houses and the exclusive renaissance palazzos. Halfway is Piazza del Duomo with the 3rd C Palazzo Pretorio housing the Archeological Museum (Etruscan and medieval finds). Beyond the Piazza emerges the "Palazzo dei Priori" seat of the Civic Museum (works belonging to the Duomo, gold-works, sacred vestments, wooden inlaid works and a"Maestą", a nice picture by Maestro di Badia a Isola.)
The Duomo, in baroque style, preserves on the high altar a Crucifix attributed to Giambologna.
Above all there is the tower-house of Arnolfo di Cambio, birthplace of the same artist (1240).
Do not miss walking along the picturesque "Via delle Volte", the most suggestive street of the medieval borgo.
