Sant Agostino

ItalyCities > Siena > the Church of Sant Agostino

The Church dates back to the 1253, but it was entirely re-built by Luigi Vanvitelli in 1755. The interior is well illuminated, shaped like a Latin cross but with one nave. Right wall: on the first altar is the Communion of St. Jerome by Astolfo Petrazzi.

Second altar, the "Crucifixion" by Perugino ( 1506); remark the affectionate familiar expression on the faces of the women at the foot of the cross and the pretty landscape.

Next the Piccolomini Chapel with a fresco of the "Maestà" by Ambrogio Lorenzetti. It preserves also several treasures of art belonging to the Church.

Particularly important are the Bichi chapel with the only known frescoes by Francesco di Giorgio.

Over the altar is the "Epiphany", a masterpiece painted by Sodoma in 1518; the colors are beautiful and rich, the rocky mountains on the horizon the best the Master ever painted.

On the right wall a triptych by Simone Martini celebrating the Blessed Agostino Novello (1320). In the centre stands the figure of Agostino, above him are two Augustinian Saints. On the other sides are two panels with the representation of some of the miracles worked by Blessed Agostino with a scene of thanksgiving in each picture.

Left wall "The Massacre of the Innocents" painted by Matteo di Giovanni in 1482.

In the lunette facing the altar is a fresco of the "Madonna seated on a throne among Saints" by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.

Below a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child ascribed to Jacopo della Quercia it is a 5th Century work. The grandiose marble altar is a very fine work of art produced by Flaminio del Turco. Also the wooden confessionals are worthy of attention.

Other works : St. Christopher by Niccolò Franchini(1755); Jesus being baptised by Stefano Volpi ( 17th C); the Temptation of St. Agostino abate by Rutilio Manetti; a wooden statue of St. Nicola da Tolentino by Giacomo Cozzarelli; "The Baptism of Constantine by Francesco Vanni(1586); Immaculate Conception by C. Maratta(1671); "The Crib" by Romanelli (17th C)
