One of the highest and most handsome hill towns in Tuscany, Montepulciano has a rich collection of fine builidings and churches designed by some of the most distinguised architects of the Renaissance; Vignola, Sangallo, Peruzzi.

In a quiet location, near the west walls of Montepulciano, Palazzo Benincasa has a distinguished past, it was owned by the family of St Catherine of Siena and then by Giangastone de Medici whose imposing bust is above the entrance. Onct: through the wooden doors, a gracious stone staircase leads up to the top floor entrance to La Mansarda.
 

The sitting room with open fireplace is decorated and furnished in most welcoming, attractive and comfortable contemporary style with ochre colour washed walls and distinctive black and white kitchen area with travertine marble tops (pictured overleaf).

 Guests can place chairs or cushions by the large picture windows to enjoy the lovely panorama, overlooking the square and church of San Francesco.
There are also extensive views over the terracotta rooftops and towers to Lake Trasimeno.

The bedroom with blue colour washed walls (pictured above) has a stunning view out over the jewel in the crown of Montepulciano, the church of San Biagio (on inside right strip of our green folder) widely considered one of the most important churches of the High Renaissance and Pienza.

 Sunlovers can take a chair down to the quiet square of San Francesco with lovely views out over the surrounding cypress studded countryside.

The famous ruby red Vino Nobile wine of Montepulciano can be bought at a shop in the Palazzo and there are numerous 'cantine' or cellars all over town where it can be sampled and bought. Steps away from the Palazzo is Piazza Grande, the main square with fine cathedral.

From the tower of the Palazzo Communale there are magnificient views over the Val di Chiana, to Pienza and Monticchiello to Monte Amiata and on a clear day the towers of Siena.

All elegant boutiques, restaurants, bars are within very easy walking distance of the Palazzo.
 

Montepulciano hosts numerous live festivals. Piazza. Grande is one of the venues for the international classical and contemporary music, dance, theatre and figurative arts festival 'Cantiere Internazionale dell'Arte'.


The Festival of the Assumption is celebrated with light opera in the town squares. Processions in historical dress precede Montepulciano's Palio - the Bravio delle Botti last Sunday in August ) when teams from each district or 'contrada' race a barrel through the streets.

 For the active mountain bikes can be hired and there are tennis courts.

There is a hot spring swimming pool at Sant'Albino (approx. 3 km) and open and covered swimming pools at Montepulciano Stazione or Chianciano (8 km).


Montepulciano lies in the very heart of southern Tuscany and is an ideal base from which to visit its attractions Pienza, Montalcino, San Quirico, Bagno Vignoni, Chiusi, Lake Trasimeno, Orvieto are all within easy reach.

A highly recommended holiday base for those who love fine wines and food, art, architecture and the arts and an unusual bolt hole to tuck yourself away over the millenium period.

Facilities: Television, Video-Tape, Washing machine, Dishwasher, Hi-Fi Stereo, weekly change of linen. Food for breakfast, and all services for cooking included oil, garlic, onion, spices etc. The famous ruby red Vino Nobile wine of Montepulciano can be bought and sampled with delicious local food at a CANTINA in the Palazzo.

Airports: Florence 135 km, Pisa 220 km, Perugia 70 km, Rome (Fiumicino) 176 km. Places of Interest: very wide choice of shops, bars, restaurants in Montepulciano. Other villages Pienza, Montalcino, San Quirico, Siena, Bagno Vignoni (hot springs water) all between 20/35km. Arezzo 60 km. Siena 65 km. Perugia 74 km. Car hire recommended: Suitcases can be droppped off at the Palazzo but free parking for non-residents only available outside town walls (2 min. walking from the house). Car hire essential.

Price: Available all the year, price per week  800 Euro Jul/Aug/Sept, other months 700 Euro. Booking deposit  30%  to secure reservation, total payment at the arrival.  Available also for long periods (over a month and more, price will be established with the client). Arrival could be established in advance, better from Saturday to Saturday. Extra charges central heating (pay per use) Only from Nov to March. Refundable security deposit 250 Euro (Cash) for any eventual damage or breakage which may occur during the stay.
